Yoga originated in India several thousand years ago, and its principles were
first written down by a scholar named Patanjali in the second century B.C.
The word yoga comes from a Sanskrit word, yukti, and means "union" or
"yoke". The various physical and mental disciplines of yoga were seen as a
method for individuals to attain union with the divine.
Today, yoga is mainly regarded as a beneficial form of physical exercise
involving breathing practices, postures and sequences. As well as the
physical benefits that yoga brings - such as greater strength and
flexibility and increased energy levels - it is also a meditative practice
that can bring a feeling of relaxation and renewal.
Yoga exercises all the major muscle groups and is a versatile practice that
works well on its own, or alongside other forms of exercise, such as running
or golf.
