FMS Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can the FMS help with my injuries? +

It is important to note that FMS is not used to diagnose or treat specific medical conditions or injuries. The screen is designed to help identify residual effects from previous injury or less optimal patterns due to inefficient or poor biomechanics. If you have a current injury or are in pain, we advise you to first seek professional medical advice before undergoing the screen as pain or injury may affect your results.
  • What happens following my initial screen? +

After your initial screen, we aim to implement a corrective exercise plan to improve any movement limitations, dysfunctions or asymmetries that you may have. You can book to be re-screened a few weeks later and/or you may require a session to progress your exercises and discuss specific training needs with your FMS expert. Once the desired corrective outcomes have been achieved, your FMS expert can suggest further progressions to improve movement competency and reduce risk of injury.
  • What is corrective exercise? +

While there are varying definitions of corrective exercise available, our corrective exercise strategies are based on your individual movement profile and screen results. These exercises consider the most significant limitations, dysfunctions and asymmetries and are prescribed to enhance or improve movement, function and performance in relation to your lowest scores. Where needed, corrective exercises are implemented to improve mobility, stability and, most importantly, motor control and are aimed at giving movement patterns integrity and quality. Using a specific corrective algorithm, these exercises could add tailored mobility work, stability work, motor-control-based progressions, reactive neuromuscular training and more. It is important to note that achieving positive outcomes depends largely on how well you follow your prescribed corrective exercise programme. Proper execution and consistency pay dividends.
  • How shall I prepare for the screen? +

    Before your screen:
    - Do not practise – it will not have a positive effect on your results and could cause injury.
    - Avoid any heavy or strenuous physical exercise for at least 48 hours.

    At your screen:
    - Wear clothes that do not restrict your movement.
    - Wear orthotics if you usually use them.
    - Bring a water bottle and a towel.

  • What do I get from the screen? +

Following your screen, you will be provided with your score and your FMS expert will discuss the outcome. Where patterns or movements are less optimal than desired, you will be given recommendations on the most effective corrective exercise strategy. These exercises will aim at improving any limited, dysfunctional or asymmetrical movement patterns that you may have.

You will be given a full FMS report and your FMS expert will invite you to register with Functional Movement Systems. Registration will allow you to access your personal workouts and calendars as set out by your FMS expert. Following your initial session, you will have online access to your results, corrective exercises, progression and tracking, including videos and detailed instructions for your prescribed exercises.
